Completing Time Studies using a Video file
 Figure 1: Video analysis |
Steps to perform a simple video analysis
| 1. | Keep the Value added type as 'Estimated', Study Type as 'Video' and the View Type as 'Standard'. |
| 2. | Create the tasks in the sheet by providing an ID for each. |
| 3. | Next browse for a video through the settings tab. |
| 4. | Click on the OT column and click the play button. |
| 5. | This starts the video, in order to record time click the record button. |
| 6. | Click the next button as the tasks get completed on the video. Note the button adjacent to next is skip, in case the user wants to skip a task. Clicking skip will move it to the next task. |
| 7. | Next click calculate. The time is calculated based on number of observations and the allowance %. |
Recording NVA, VA, and NEC percentages
If you would like to collect additional information such as the non-value added and the value-added percentages, change your "Value Added" setting you defined in Step 1 from "Estimated" to "Real time". This will cause three additional icons to appear below the play button.
Figure 2: Recording VA, NVA, and NEC in video time studies |
In this type of time study, you can define whether each action in the task is Value Added (VA), Non-Value Added (NVA), or Non-Value Added but Necessary (NEC). To do this, begin watching the video of an activity. If what you are watching is non-value added, such as walking or sorting, click on the NVA icon. As long as the NVA icon is selected, the time being recorded will be considered non-value added. In the same way, if the action you are watching is value added, click on the VA icon. Switch between VA, NVA, and NEC based on what you are observing. At the end of your observation, click calculate. Notice now, that NVA and VA % are calculated and displayed at the top of the screen. If you would like a visual description of what you recorded, click on the "Action Summary" tab, located to the right of the video screen. This tab will show you a pie chart of the NVA, VA, and NEC % of the total activity.
Calculated Time Studies
To compare an observed time to a calculated time study based on a specific time standard such as MTMB, you must first have completed a video analysis time study. After you have times recorded for each task, double click on the cell in the column to the right of the Value-Added column (See Figure 2). A new screen, shown in Figure 3 below will now appear. This interface will allow you to generate a comparison between your observed time and a calculated time.

Steps to perform a calculated time study
| 1. | Click on the Play button to view the portion of the video which is related to the task selected. This is optional and not required. |
| 2. | Select the Time Standard method you would like to use from the list box. |
| 3. | Enter data into the displayed spreadsheet. Note: Each Time Standard method has a unique spreadsheet. |
| 4. | Click on the Calculate button. The calculated time will now be displayed in the Total text box. |
| 5. | Click on the second Calculate button. This will convert your time units to the same units used in the observation time study. The calculated time as well as the observed time can be viewed in the task summary section of the screen. |
| 6. | If you are unhappy with the data you inputted, click on the Reset button to remove previously entered information. |
| 7. | When you are finished, click on the OK button located at the bottom right corner of the screen. |
| 8. | In the normal video time study interface, you should now see an icon located in the cell next to the Value-Added column. Reference Figure 4 below. Double click on the icon to open back up the calculated time study interface. Right click, and then select delete to remove the calculated time. |
