The Flow Planner is a valuable tool. Engineers at a logistics company used the Flow Planner to see where parts arrive, get processed and stored, and then which dock they are shipped from. Straight-line flow diagrams identified the best receiving dock assignment for each part number to minimize total material flow to and from the bulk storage areas. A Congestion diagrams also identified a dangerous level of material movement between the bulk processing area and rack storage area. The engineers determined that they reduced total material distance traveled by over 30%.
